Ask Lisa

Dear Lisa:

We are trying to get feedback from our Mexican employees here at work, without much success. Any suggestions?

Getting honest feedback in any culture can be difficult, and how to go about it is the best question you can ask yourself. Since you already work with Mexicans, you have probably perceived that there is a tendency to not question authority openly. The exception to the rule is when a good relationship is in place. With that said, work on building trust and friendship with the employees. Share personal information about yourself, show your sense of humor, and be available. Maintain an open-door policy and when you need feedback on sensitive topics, approach employees one-on-one, in a private setting. Do not expect them to come to you.

Of course there are volumes to say about this issue, but these are a few suggestions to get you on the right track. Good luck!
